Eat This Instead: 7 Food Swaps That Will Leave You Feeling Satisfied

I know you’re craving something that you’ll just regret eating later, but trust  me, once your belly’s full you won’t care what you just put in your mouth. So why not make it something healthy?
Here are 7 swaps you can make that won’t leave you feeling unsatisfied OR guilty:
1) Ditch the granola for oatmeal. A half-cup of cooked oats are about 150 calories and 1 gram of sugar. Sprinkling some fresh fruit on top, like blueberries, offers another 8 calories.
Meanwhile, granola can hit you with 200 calories and 13 grams of sugar.
2) Spaghetti sans noodles. There’s nothing quite like pasta, but the problem is a super small ½ cup is 200 calories. And really, who eats just a half-cup of pasta? Instead, use spaghetti squash. When topped with your favorite sauce, you won’t even miss the wheat-based noodles, plus you’ll be saving all those calories and getting generous helpings of fiber, vitamin C, folate and magnesium to boost your energy.
3) Mash this! Mashed potatoes are the perfect comfort food, but with all that comfort comes a whopping 116 calories per cup! Instead, mash some cauliflower and you won’t even know the difference. Plus you’ll be getting a day’s worth of vitamin C for the low, low price of only 27 calories.
4) Pita is not a health foodI don’t know how it happened, but somehow when hummus became praised for its nutritional value, pita bread hopped along for the ride. Pita isn’t much different nutritionally than white bread, and no one is mistaking that for health food! Instead, why don’t you cut up some red pepper to dip into your chickpea paste! The two are a perfect pairing and you’ll grab tons of fiber, and vitamins A, C and K.
5) Greek Yogurt > Sour Cream. If you’re going to go dairy, ditch the sour cream. Replace it with Greek yogurt for a similar taste and you avoid 2 grams of saturated fat while doubling your protein.
6) Snack on almonds. Too many snack/protein/meal-replacement bars are essentially just candy bars masked as healthy alternatives. Why not go for something that truly is healthy, natural, nutritious and will fill you up: Almonds. Grab a handful and enjoy!
7) Grass fed beef. There’s a big difference between regular beef that’s been grain fed vs. cows that have been allowed to enjoy what they are biologically predisposed to eat: grass. Cows love grass, but in an effort to fatten them up quickly for maximum profits, most of the beef you find in grocery stores has been grain fed. The benefits of grass fed beef to you are a third less fat per serving and an amount of heart-healthy omega-3s similar to seafood.
