Lifting Weights As You Age! Pump Some Iron...

Lifting Weights As You Age! Pump Some Iron...

By HealthSource Chiropractic

You may think that a quick shuffle around the block is enough to keep your health in check during your
Golden Years, but not so, according to a recent study.  Apparently one of the biggest factors for longer life is the amount of muscle mass you have.

More than 3,000 recently deceased people, age 55 or older for the men when they died and 65 or older for the women, were studied over a 6-year period.  Those with significant muscle mass died later than those without much muscle, the study found. The findings, published in the American Journal of Medicine, also indicate that the popular measurement of health, Body Mass Index (BMI), may not be enough when it comes to predicting long-term health.

Soccer Players RUN How Far on the Field???

Soccer Players RUN How Far on the Field???

In honor of the FIFA World Cup, we though it was fitting to discuss how much running occurs during the average soccer game and how it compares to other sports.  So here’s the scoop…

Soccer players average 7 miles of running per game and get this… referees run more than that!! It’s a large field and fast moving game that lasts 90 minutes (that’s an Hour and a Half of play time). The amount of running does vary depending on the position played, midfielders taking the win on distance.
Want to know how soccer compares to other competitive sports? Check it out:
Football: 1.25 miles on average (receivers and cornerbacks)
Baseball: .046 miles!
Basketball: 2.9 miles according to RunnersWorld.com
Tennis: 3 miles during a match.
Are these distances what you expected?
That’s a WHOLE lot of calories being burnt all around. How about this stat: According to Harvard Health Publications, the average soccer player (155 – 185 pounds) burns about 260-311 calories for 30 minutes of play time.

Not So Sweet: World Health Organization says sugar intake should be half of what was previously recommended

Not So Sweet: World Health Organization says sugar intake should be half of what was previously recommended

We can’t sugar coat this: The World Health Organization now says daily sugar intake should only be 5% of your total calories—or less than one can of soda per day—which is half of what the agency previously recommended.

After a review of about 9,000 studies, WHO experts concluded that dropping sugar intake to that level will combat obesity and cavities.
The sugar in question only refers to sweetened foods, syrups, fruit juices, and honey, and does not include those occurring naturally in fruits.
Scientists are gearing up for a battle with the food industry following WHO’s announcement. When the organization last revised its sugar guidelines more than a decade ago, the U.S. sugar industry lobbied Congress to threaten withdrawing millions of dollars in funding to WHO. That didn’t happen, but a reference to the sugar limit was removed from a global diet strategy, even while the recommendation passed.

Adjusting For Health!

We stumbled upon this fantastic article in Pathways Magazine about chiropractic care for newborns.

The article noted that the infants responded to care with immediate muscular relaxation and a greater ability to sleep!

Fibromyalgia affects an estimated 3 to 6 percent of Americans, mostly women.

Fibromyalgia affects an estimated 3 to 6 percent of Americans, mostly women.

—Condition Of the Week #2 —

Who do you know with Fibromyalgia Syndrome?

Fibromyalgia affects an estimated 3 to 6 percent of Americans, mostly women.

Typical symptoms include:

• Widespread pain in all 4 quadrants of the body for a minimum of 3 months; and
• Tenderness or pain in at least 11 tender points when pressure is applied. These tender points cluster around the neck, shoulder, chest, hip, knee and elbow regions.

In addition, symptoms can include:
• Fatigue
• Sleep disorders
• Chronic headaches
• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Cognitive or memory impairment
• Malaise and muscle pain after exertion
• Jaw pain
• Morning stiffness
• Menstrual cramping
• Irritable bowels
• Numbness and tingling sensations
• Skin and chemical sensitivities

Treatment: A change in nutrition, sleep pattern, and physical activity can greatly reduce the symptoms. Chiropractic care has consistently ranked as one of the therapeutic approaches that offer the most relief for the fibromyalgia patient. Your doctor of chiropractic can also include massage therapy, ultrasound and electrical stimulation in the treatment program, which may help relieve stress, pain, and other symptoms. Your doctor of chiropractic has the knowledge, training, and expertise to help you understand your problem and, in many cases, to manage it successfully. Remember, however, that the treatment program can be successful only with your active participation. If your doctor of chiropractic feels that he or she cannot help you, you will be directed to another health care provider.

Drop the chocolate and potato chips! Try eating some of these foods instead: Almonds, Avocados, Oatmeal, Oranges, Spinach, Salmon.
Swap Coffee For Green Tea
