Lifting Weights As You Age! Pump Some Iron...

Lifting Weights As You Age! Pump Some Iron...

By HealthSource Chiropractic

You may think that a quick shuffle around the block is enough to keep your health in check during your
Golden Years, but not so, according to a recent study.  Apparently one of the biggest factors for longer life is the amount of muscle mass you have.

More than 3,000 recently deceased people, age 55 or older for the men when they died and 65 or older for the women, were studied over a 6-year period.  Those with significant muscle mass died later than those without much muscle, the study found. The findings, published in the American Journal of Medicine, also indicate that the popular measurement of health, Body Mass Index (BMI), may not be enough when it comes to predicting long-term health.

Soccer Players RUN How Far on the Field???

Soccer Players RUN How Far on the Field???

In honor of the FIFA World Cup, we though it was fitting to discuss how much running occurs during the average soccer game and how it compares to other sports.  So here’s the scoop…

Soccer players average 7 miles of running per game and get this… referees run more than that!! It’s a large field and fast moving game that lasts 90 minutes (that’s an Hour and a Half of play time). The amount of running does vary depending on the position played, midfielders taking the win on distance.
Want to know how soccer compares to other competitive sports? Check it out:
Football: 1.25 miles on average (receivers and cornerbacks)
Baseball: .046 miles!
Basketball: 2.9 miles according to RunnersWorld.com
Tennis: 3 miles during a match.
Are these distances what you expected?
That’s a WHOLE lot of calories being burnt all around. How about this stat: According to Harvard Health Publications, the average soccer player (155 – 185 pounds) burns about 260-311 calories for 30 minutes of play time.

Not So Sweet: World Health Organization says sugar intake should be half of what was previously recommended

Not So Sweet: World Health Organization says sugar intake should be half of what was previously recommended

We can’t sugar coat this: The World Health Organization now says daily sugar intake should only be 5% of your total calories—or less than one can of soda per day—which is half of what the agency previously recommended.

After a review of about 9,000 studies, WHO experts concluded that dropping sugar intake to that level will combat obesity and cavities.
The sugar in question only refers to sweetened foods, syrups, fruit juices, and honey, and does not include those occurring naturally in fruits.
Scientists are gearing up for a battle with the food industry following WHO’s announcement. When the organization last revised its sugar guidelines more than a decade ago, the U.S. sugar industry lobbied Congress to threaten withdrawing millions of dollars in funding to WHO. That didn’t happen, but a reference to the sugar limit was removed from a global diet strategy, even while the recommendation passed.

Adjusting For Health!

We stumbled upon this fantastic article in Pathways Magazine about chiropractic care for newborns.

The article noted that the infants responded to care with immediate muscular relaxation and a greater ability to sleep!

Fibromyalgia affects an estimated 3 to 6 percent of Americans, mostly women.

Fibromyalgia affects an estimated 3 to 6 percent of Americans, mostly women.

—Condition Of the Week #2 —

Who do you know with Fibromyalgia Syndrome?

Fibromyalgia affects an estimated 3 to 6 percent of Americans, mostly women.

Typical symptoms include:

• Widespread pain in all 4 quadrants of the body for a minimum of 3 months; and
• Tenderness or pain in at least 11 tender points when pressure is applied. These tender points cluster around the neck, shoulder, chest, hip, knee and elbow regions.

In addition, symptoms can include:
• Fatigue
• Sleep disorders
• Chronic headaches
• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Cognitive or memory impairment
• Malaise and muscle pain after exertion
• Jaw pain
• Morning stiffness
• Menstrual cramping
• Irritable bowels
• Numbness and tingling sensations
• Skin and chemical sensitivities

Treatment: A change in nutrition, sleep pattern, and physical activity can greatly reduce the symptoms. Chiropractic care has consistently ranked as one of the therapeutic approaches that offer the most relief for the fibromyalgia patient. Your doctor of chiropractic can also include massage therapy, ultrasound and electrical stimulation in the treatment program, which may help relieve stress, pain, and other symptoms. Your doctor of chiropractic has the knowledge, training, and expertise to help you understand your problem and, in many cases, to manage it successfully. Remember, however, that the treatment program can be successful only with your active participation. If your doctor of chiropractic feels that he or she cannot help you, you will be directed to another health care provider.

A less Stressful Way to Say ‘I DO’!

A less Stressful Way to Say ‘I DO’!

How to De-Stress before the big day the right way.
You got the ring…the date, the dress, and the venue.  Then you notice your wedding shower was the wrong shade of pink. I know STRESSFUL right? No matter how physically and mentally prepared you are for the big day, stressing out about the whole process is kind of inevitable. Actually, it’s very normal for brides and grooms to experience some level of stress about the big day.
We urge you to not let the anxiety drain the excitement and joy out of your wedding festivities.  To make your process a healthy/less stressful one, use these 5 tips:
Stress Eat the Healthy Way
Drop the chocolate and potato chips! Try eating some of these foods instead: Almonds, Avocados, Oatmeal, Oranges, Spinach, Salmon.
Swap Coffee For Green Tea
It contains soothing properties called theanine which help with relaxation and it also has less caffeine. Caffeine can increase anxiety even when you are not planning a BIG wedding.
Create an Organized Check List
Keep all details of the wedding in one place for easy access and less stress when you are looking for an answer!!
Exercise to Help Decrease Stress
Whether it’s yoga or time at the gym, getting a good workout in can help protect you against added anxiety and stress.

Chiropractic Can Enhance Performance in Athletics or LIFE!!

Chiropractic Can Enhance Performance in Athletics or LIFE!!

Can I Enhance My Performance Through Chiropractic?

Most of us know that chiropractic helps enhance athletic performance, but did you know it helps with your performance in life also?  Kids do better in school, they think clearer, are more mentally alert, and are more stable individuals. Fathers are better fathers, mothers are better mothers, teachers are better teachers, and coaches are better coaches… when your nervous system is functioning at its best. Would it mean any difference in your life if you had even 10% more energy… slept 10% better or were 10% more creative??

People under chiropractic care seem to have a competitive edge. But how do you know if you need a chiropractor?  The only way to know for sure is to be checked.  And if you find a good chiropractor that is honest and up front, who is gifted in his/her field and able to determine whether your spine is aligned or misaligned, then you have the opportunity to choose what kind of performance you want to get out of life.

May is correct Posture Month: Have you had your posture checked

May is correct Posture Month: Have you had your posture checked

THE IMPORTANT ROLE POSTURE PLAYS IN YOUR LIFE

When you have proper posture, you not only notice a positive difference in your confidence, but also improved appearance, strength, stamina, and overall health.
Poor posture has a lot to do with many of the serious health issues affecting our world today, including problems associated with breathing, the digestive system, physical coordination, and the overall efficiency of the body. Unfortunately, many people fail to link their pain and discomfort with poor posture, and worse, fail to realize they have a posture problem to begin with. This article will help |show you how to perform a proper posture test, providing you, your friends, and family the ability to detect posture problems. If, in fact, a posture or pain issue is found, a HealthSource chiropractor may be able to help with a specific treatment program tailored specifically for you. If poor posture is detected, contact your HealthSource Chiropractor.  While poor posture can have a serious impact on your life, many of its associated problems can be effectively treated.
Posture Check
1. Find a space that has a hard, level surface and allows ample space on all sides of the test subject.
2. Subject should close their eyes, and keep them closed throughout test.
3. Have the subject march in place for about 5 seconds (4-5 steps).
4. Once the marching in place is complete, the subject should look up, toward the ceiling, then back down, toward the floor, several times; finally stopping with their head facing forward, in what they consider their most natural position.
Front Vertical Alignment Check
5. Stand directly in front of the subject, approximately 4 feet away.
6. Check that the nose, the chin, the center of the chest, the navel, the inseam of the pants and the space between the ankles align.
Side Vertical Alignment Check
7. Step directly to the side of the subject, approximately 4 feet away.
8. Check that the ear, shoulder, hip and ankle align.
Back Horizontal Alignment Check
9. Step directly behind the subject, approximately 4 feet away.
10. Inspect the position of the ears, the shoulders and the hips. They should be aligned horizontally; perpendicular to the floor. If a posture problem is detected, it is likely a bone issue degenerative in nature. Over time, these degenerative changes may lead to chronic pain, and a complete spinal screening is necessary. Is your child getting enough Omega-3?

Is your child getting enough Omega-3?

Brain Development

Research has shown that Omega-3 fatty acids, known as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an important ingredient for proper brain function.  DHA is found in high concentration in the gray matter of our brains.   By making brain cell membranes more fluid, we improve the communication between the brain cells.  Unfortunately, the average diet that most adults have, and almost certainly our children’s diets, rarely include the Omega-3 fatty acids that we need.
Because of the importance of Omega-3  to our bodies and brain development of our youth (and adults alike), we formed a partnership with Dr. James Chestnut of Innate Choice Supplements.
Innate Choice offers the three essential natural supplementsthat science and research tells us you need for the rest of your life:  Omega-3, Vitamin D, and Probiotics. And unlike so many supplement companies, Innate Choice NEVER uses synthetics or artificially concentrates their products.
Innate Choice’s Omega Sufficiency product is the world's premier EPA/DHA omega 3 fish oil. Each teaspoon or 4 capsules provides 740-825 mg of EPA and 460-550 mg of DHA omega 3 essential fatty acids which have been scientifically shown to be a crucial requirement for health and important in the prevention of illnesses such as heart disease, arthritis, ADD, depression, stroke, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer's.  Omega Sufficiency® is flavored with 100% natural lemon extract - it actually tastes good! Because of the high quality and purity of the oil there is no fishy taste, no fishy smell, and no fishy aftertaste. Even kids like it! And for kids, Omega has shown positive effects in brain development.
So please contact your HealthSource Physician today to discuss Omega Sufficiency and how it can help your child (and yourself) with brain development, and as an important component to overall wellness and leading a healthy, active lifestyle.

Getting a Grip on Stress! What is it?

Getting a Grip on Stress! What is it?

We need to learn how to laugh more!  A study reprinted years ago showed that on average, toddlers laugh 400 times a day, while adults only laugh 15 times a day.
Research at Loma Linda University showed that comedy, producing laughter, has the ability to lower your body’s blood pressure and increase your immune system by lowering your body’s level of stress. If we ever hope to deal more effectively with stress, all of us need to learn how to laugh more.
But what is stress?  One person defines stress as, “The rate of wear and tear on the body as a result of anxiety, worry, or exhaustion from a difficult or challenging situation.
Stress can be mental or emotional.  It can make you feel anxious, worried, fearful and even angry. In fact some people express the stress in their life on the road in the form of  road rage. So how could you deal with someone who expresses their frustrations and anger with life on the road… on you?

Stress can be chemical. In fact, many Americans try to counter the chemical effects of stress by taking more chemicals such as drugs or alcohol.  According to the latest statistics, over 75 billion dollars are spent each year on legal drugs.  Of the 75 billion dollars, about half, or 40 billion dollars are spent each year trying to help stress induced problems.

Stress can be physical.  Is there any doubt that stress can cause muscle tension, neck pain, backaches, stomach ulcers, and even heart attacks?  Stress can certainly be physical.

Some of the primary symptoms of stress include: headaches, fatigue, pain throughout the neck, shoulders, or lower back, irritability, sleeping and or digestive problems, allergy and sinus troubles.  If you suffer more then one stress symptom, that means two, three, four or more, or you suffer from these symptoms more then once a week, your body has a stress disorder.

For more information about reducing your stress contact your local HealthSource Chiropractor at (888) 977-6734.

From Your Chiropractor...An Experience of a Lifetime!

From Your Chiropractor...An Experience of a Lifetime!

We recently ran across this amazing video of a woman wake boarding with dolphins...what would you do in this situation?

Workouts Just For Women? Nonsense!

Workouts Just For Women? Nonsense!

How men could benefit from exercises marketed to their wives.

Dudes. Listen up. Just because the majority of people in your local spin class wear yoga pants doesn’t mean you should avoid sweating it out with them. Workouts marketed to women are just as beneficial to men, and because there are so many of them, you could be missing out on new ways to get in shape and avoid burnout.
Here are a few of my favorites that you should try immediately:
The Barre
What it is: If ballet and yoga had a kid, this would be it. It can give you those long and lean muscles and improve overall strength.
Why Men Should Do It: It’s a great core workout and if you want legs of steel, look no further.
Pilates
What it is:  Developed by Joseph Pilates during WWI, it began as a way to rehabilitate injured soldiers through core strength, flexibility, and graceful movement.
Why Men Should Do It: Pilates is great because it works for a wide range of people, from athletes and dancers to seniors and pregnant women. It’s really great for men who lift weights because it can loosen tight muscles.
Zumba
What it is: Developed in the 1990s by aerobics instructor Beto Perez when he introduced salsa music in a class he was teaching, Zumba combines elements of several dance styles to create a fun cardio class where you can burn up to 10 calories a minute.
Why Men Should Do It: Where else can you get your cardio in while also working on your dance moves? Get in a class and prepare to sweat your butt off.
Spinning
What it is: 45 minutes to an hour on a bike may seem exhausting, but that’s the point. Combine an intense calorie burn with a lower-body strength workout and you have the perfect exercise.
Why Men Should Do It: Torch calories and get massive quads, glutes and calves. What’s not to love? Spinning offers an awesome workout in an exciting group environment.

The Boy and The Echo

A son and his father were walking on the mountains.
Suddenly, his son falls, hurts himself and screams: “AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!”
To his surprise, he hears the voice repeating, somewhere in the mountain:
“AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Curious, he yells: “Who are you?”
He receives the answer: “Who are you?”
Angered at the response, he screams: “Coward!”
He receives the answer: “Coward!”
He looks to his father and asks: “What’s going on?”
The father smiles and says: “My son, pay attention.”
And then he screams to the mountain: “I admire you!”
The voice answers: “I admire you!”
Again the man screams: “You are a champion!”
The voice answers: “You are a champion!”
The boy is surprised, but does not understand.

Then the father explains: “People call this ECHO, but really this is LIFE. It gives you back everything you say or do. Our life is simply a reflection of our actions. If you want more love in the world, create more love in your heart. If you want more people to be patient and respectful to you, give patience and respect. This relationship applies to everything, in all aspects of life; Life will give you back everything you have given to it. Your life is not a coincidence, but a mirror of your own doings”

Condition Of the Week From Your Chiropractor: Shoulder Pain

Condition Of the Week From Your Chiropractor: Shoulder Pain

Your son wants to throw the ball around? Not today. Laundry piling up, but it’s too painful to separate whites from colors?
Life can get pretty rough when you have Shoulder Pain. You never think about how important your arms are until you can’t use one of them because of the searing, pinching pain that shouts into your shoulder at even the slightest movement. Shoulder pain affects an estimated 27 million people each year.

What are the causes of shoulder pain?

Some of the most common causes for shoulder pain include:

• Neck and midback pain that’s trickling down
It may surprise you, but when you have excruciating neck
and midback pain, it can sometimes be felt in the shoulder. That’s why it’s so important to have an examination to truly pinpoint where your problem is.

• Impingement syndrome
When the tendons of the rotator cuff muscles become irritated and inflamed it causes this common affliction. Shoulder overhead movements are made all but impossible.

• Frozen shoulder
Also known as adhesive capsulitis, this condition severely restricts movement. Using Progressive Rehab® will strengthen
the area around the pain while also relieving spasms and reduce swelling that are symptomatic of the area.

• Arthritis
While not as common as hip or knee arthritis, shoulder arthritis is no less painful and debilitating.

For more information regarding shoulder pain contact your local HealthSource Chiropractor.
