May is correct Posture Month: Have you had your posture checked
May is correct Posture Month: Have you had your posture checked
THE IMPORTANT ROLE POSTURE PLAYS IN YOUR LIFE
When you have proper posture, you not only notice a positive difference in your confidence, but also improved appearance, strength, stamina, and overall health.
Poor posture has a lot to do with many of the serious health issues affecting our world today, including problems associated with breathing, the digestive system, physical coordination, and the overall efficiency of the body. Unfortunately, many people fail to link their pain and discomfort with poor posture, and worse, fail to realize they have a posture problem to begin with. This article will help |show you how to perform a proper posture test, providing you, your friends, and family the ability to detect posture problems. If, in fact, a posture or pain issue is found, a HealthSource chiropractor may be able to help with a specific treatment program tailored specifically for you. If poor posture is detected, contact your HealthSource Chiropractor. While poor posture can have a serious impact on your life, many of its associated problems can be effectively treated.
Posture Check
1. Find a space that has a hard, level surface and allows ample space on all sides of the test subject.
2. Subject should close their eyes, and keep them closed throughout test.
3. Have the subject march in place for about 5 seconds (4-5 steps).
4. Once the marching in place is complete, the subject should look up, toward the ceiling, then back down, toward the floor, several times; finally stopping with their head facing forward, in what they consider their most natural position.
Front Vertical Alignment Check
5. Stand directly in front of the subject, approximately 4 feet away.
6. Check that the nose, the chin, the center of the chest, the navel, the inseam of the pants and the space between the ankles align.
Side Vertical Alignment Check
7. Step directly to the side of the subject, approximately 4 feet away.
8. Check that the ear, shoulder, hip and ankle align.
Back Horizontal Alignment Check
9. Step directly behind the subject, approximately 4 feet away.
10. Inspect the position of the ears, the shoulders and the hips. They should be aligned horizontally; perpendicular to the floor. If a posture problem is detected, it is likely a bone issue degenerative in nature. Over time, these degenerative changes may lead to chronic pain, and a complete spinal screening is necessary. Is your child getting enough Omega-3?
Is your child getting enough Omega-3?
Brain Development
Research has shown that Omega-3 fatty acids, known as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an important ingredient for proper brain function. DHA is found in high concentration in the gray matter of our brains. By making brain cell membranes more fluid, we improve the communication between the brain cells. Unfortunately, the average diet that most adults have, and almost certainly our children’s diets, rarely include the Omega-3 fatty acids that we need.
Because of the importance of Omega-3 to our bodies and brain development of our youth (and adults alike), we formed a partnership with Dr. James Chestnut of Innate Choice Supplements.
Innate Choice offers the three essential natural supplementsthat science and research tells us you need for the rest of your life: Omega-3, Vitamin D, and Probiotics. And unlike so many supplement companies, Innate Choice NEVER uses synthetics or artificially concentrates their products.
Innate Choice’s Omega Sufficiency product is the world's premier EPA/DHA omega 3 fish oil. Each teaspoon or 4 capsules provides 740-825 mg of EPA and 460-550 mg of DHA omega 3 essential fatty acids which have been scientifically shown to be a crucial requirement for health and important in the prevention of illnesses such as heart disease, arthritis, ADD, depression, stroke, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer's. Omega Sufficiency® is flavored with 100% natural lemon extract - it actually tastes good! Because of the high quality and purity of the oil there is no fishy taste, no fishy smell, and no fishy aftertaste. Even kids like it! And for kids, Omega has shown positive effects in brain development.
So please contact your HealthSource Physician today to discuss Omega Sufficiency and how it can help your child (and yourself) with brain development, and as an important component to overall wellness and leading a healthy, active lifestyle.
Getting a Grip on Stress! What is it?
Getting a Grip on Stress! What is it?
We need to learn how to laugh more! A study reprinted years ago showed that on average, toddlers laugh 400 times a day, while adults only laugh 15 times a day.
Research at Loma Linda University showed that comedy, producing laughter, has the ability to lower your body’s blood pressure and increase your immune system by lowering your body’s level of stress. If we ever hope to deal more effectively with stress, all of us need to learn how to laugh more.
But what is stress? One person defines stress as, “The rate of wear and tear on the body as a result of anxiety, worry, or exhaustion from a difficult or challenging situation.
Stress can be mental or emotional. It can make you feel anxious, worried, fearful and even angry. In fact some people express the stress in their life on the road in the form of road rage. So how could you deal with someone who expresses their frustrations and anger with life on the road… on you?
Stress can be chemical. In fact, many Americans try to counter the chemical effects of stress by taking more chemicals such as drugs or alcohol. According to the latest statistics, over 75 billion dollars are spent each year on legal drugs. Of the 75 billion dollars, about half, or 40 billion dollars are spent each year trying to help stress induced problems.
Stress can be physical. Is there any doubt that stress can cause muscle tension, neck pain, backaches, stomach ulcers, and even heart attacks? Stress can certainly be physical.
Some of the primary symptoms of stress include: headaches, fatigue, pain throughout the neck, shoulders, or lower back, irritability, sleeping and or digestive problems, allergy and sinus troubles. If you suffer more then one stress symptom, that means two, three, four or more, or you suffer from these symptoms more then once a week, your body has a stress disorder.
For more information about reducing your stress contact your local HealthSource Chiropractor at (888) 977-6734.

Prevent Back Injury While Gardening This Spring
Prevent Back Injury While Gardening This Spring!
Spring is here, for most of us anyways and it is time to start digging, planting and making the garden look beautiful once again. So, how can you make gardening, during this most magnificent time of year, a good experience?
Raising your flowerbeds can make it easier by reducing the need to bend down to the ground. The height of a raised bed is completely up to the gardener’s need and if you add a border around the flowerbed it gives you a nice place to sit while working.
To prevent back injury during gardening it is important to know the proper way to work while standing or kneeling in the yard. Remember to bend with the knees, not from the waist. Let gardening tools do the job for you and choose tools that have longer handles and are lightweight to help aid you. Ask for assistance from others whenever lifting, pulling, or pushing heavy items.
You may also find it helpful to stretch during and after yard work. And if you can keep your flowerbeds closer to your home then it could mean less walking, lugging of soil and tools and generally less exertion you have to put forth.
Watch Your Form!
Make sure you let your larger muscles do the work and keep heavy items close to your body when you're lifting and carrying. Stand and sit with good posture so you aren't nursing neck pain at night or risking injury while you are working. Whether you have an injury or are trying to prevent injury from occurring chiropractic care is ideal for anyone at any age.

Condition Of the Week From Your Chiropractor: Asthma
Condition Of the Week From Your Chiropractor: Asthma
Who do you know with Asthma? Asthma is a chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways. It causes recurring periods of wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and coughing. Chiropractic is not a treatment for asthma.
However, many people with asthma report improvement after receiving chiropractic care. Why?
1. The lungs and diaphragm (the muscle used for breathing) are controlled by your nervous system.
2. Nerves that control these areas leave the brain, travel down the spinal cord and exit the mid-cervical (neck) and thoracic regions of the spine.
3. Subluxations (misalignments of spinal bones that irritate nerves) in these areas of the spine can interfere with nerve supply to the lungs causing the lungs to function abnormally.
4. A chiropractor would correct the subluxations, restoring proper nerve supply to the lungs, allowing the lungs to function optimally.
A study published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research documented the results of 81 children with asthma who received chiropractic care. The two month study revealed that those under chiropractic care who reported asthma attacks before the study, saw a 45% decrease in the number of attacks, and that 31% of the subjects voluntarily chose to decrease their medication. All this occurred because of improved nervous system control of the lungs.

TOP 10 BENEFITS OF SUNSHINE FROM YOUR CHIROPRACTOR
TOP 10 BENEFITS OF SUNSHINE FROM YOUR CHIROPRACTOR
Oh my goodness it’s been a rough winter. Bitter cold across the country, buckets of snow in the South, treacherous conditions in the East, and polar vortices as far as the eye can see.
In short: Thank God It’s Spring!
The sun is finally beginning to wake up from its snowy slumber and embrace us all with its warmth. But are you taking advantage of it yet?
If not, you may be missing out on more than just a nice afternoon outside.
Apparently our parents weren’t lying when they said sunlight was good for us. In fact, it’s really, really good for us.
If you want to know just how good, here’s 10 reasons you should be enjoying the sunshine as much as possible right now.
1. Reduce risk of Type 2 diabetes. At one time, this was considered an adult-onset disease, but now type 2 diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions in our kids. Some studies suggest that the vitamin D in sunlight can reduce the risk of developing it by as much as 40%.
2. Reduce cancer risk. Patients who had higher vitamin D blood levels when diagnosed had nearly twice the survival rate of those with lower levels for up to 20 types of cancer, including breast, colon and rectal cancer.
3. Strong bones for better bone health. Think calcium is the best way to reduce risk of developing bone diseases? Well vitamin D has actually been found to boost your calcium absorption.
4. Protect eye health. Vitamin D has been linked to both a lowered risk of macular degeneration and cataracts.
5. Boost immunity. The immune system depends on vitamin D to function properly.
6. Fight obesity. It’s thought that there is a direct correlation to sun exposure and an increase in metabolism. One thought is that less sunlight makes the body think it’s still winter and continues in fat-storing mode.
7. Lower blood pressure. The warmth of the sun can improve circulation and vitamin D has been known to reduce blood pressure.
8. Reduce stroke risk. Sun exposure could reduce your risk of stroke by as much as 60 percent!
9. Sleep better. Sun exposure can help regulate circadian rhythms—the 24-hour cycle that determines sleep and eating patterns in animals.
10. Improve mood. Sunshine improves mood and makes it more likely that you’ll move around when it’s warmer outside.
Much of the benefit from sun exposure comes from the vitamin D you absorb, which begs the question: Couldn’t you just get that benefit from a supplement?
Well yes and no. Supplements are certainly preferable over a deficiency, but our bodies have evolved to synthesize vitamin D, which means the all-natural way has the advantage.
